Smart toilets: the integrated verdicts
The short verdict
Buy the TOTO Neorest RS if the budget reaches it — it is the most complete hygiene system in this file and the only one with three full warranty years at this level. Buy the Kohler Veil if compact, sculpted design is the deciding factor. In the value class, the WoodBridge B0930S and Horow T05 deliver most of the automation — auto lid, auto flush, foam shield on the Horow — for roughly a fifth of the Neorest's price, and the scorecards show exactly where the difference lives: warranty length, parts depth, and documentation quality. No fixture on this page installs for its sticker price; read the installed-cost ledger below before comparing any two numbers.
Researched verdict
These scorecards are editorial assessments scored from manufacturer specifications, manuals and certification listings under the
published rubric. No hands-on laboratory testing is claimed. Prices are street ranges observed at US retailers in October 2026.
How the rubric adapts here — stated plainly. The six published criteria and weights are unchanged. Two interpretations are specific to whole fixtures: Wash performance now covers both the bidet wash and flush performance (published gpf and MaP scores where the manufacturer or MaP listing provides them), because an integrated toilet that washes well and flushes poorly has failed at its primary job; and Total cost of ownership is scored on the installed figure — fixture, removal of the old toilet, plumber, and any electrical work — not the carton price. Comfort & heating covers heated seat, dryer, and the automation set (auto lid, auto flush, night light) that defines this class.

Where it wins
- The automation set, at value money. Auto lid, auto flush, foot-sensor operation and an LED display are features this file otherwise prices above $4,500. The B0930S includes them at roughly $2,000 street.
- A published flush number. A 1000-gram MaP score is the maximum the MaP scale reports, and WoodBridge publishes it where several value rivals publish nothing. On paper, the flush is not the weak point.
- Foam and filtration. The foam dispenser and filtered wash water are real, documented systems — not trim.
Where it loses
- One year of warranty on a whole fixture. A seat can be swapped in an afternoon; a one-piece toilet cannot. One-year coverage on a $2,000 plumbed appliance is the thinnest promise in this file, and it caps the Build score.
- The licensed-plumber condition. WoodBridge's own warranty language ties coverage to installation by a licensed, insured plumber. Budget the plumber as mandatory, not optional — see the installed-cost ledger.
- Parts depth is unproven. The value brands' long-term parts catalogues are thinner than TOTO's or Kohler's; a failed proprietary pump or board in year four is a whole-fixture question, not a seat question.
Buy it if you want the integrated look and automation now, accept a one-year warranty, and will pay for a licensed install. Skip it if warranty depth matters more than the feature list — that is the Neorest's entire argument.

| Flush | Dual flush 1.0 / 1.28 gpf, pump-assisted; manufacturer-published MaP 1000g; WaterSense / ETL / cUPC listings cited by the manufacturer |
| Wash | Rear, feminine, pulsating & oscillating wash; adjustable water temperature, pressure and nozzle position |

| Foam | Foam shield fitted — a foam layer on the bowl water that suppresses splash and odour |
| Outage flush | Power-off flush available via a separately purchased battery box — not included; the desk scores what ships |
| Comfort | Heated seat (4 settings), warm-air dryer, automatic catalytic deodorizer |
| Controls | Remote control |
| Warranty | 1 year limited (manufacturer listings); confirm current term before purchase |
Where it wins
- The lowest entry price in the file, without stripping the class features. At $949 direct it undercuts the WoodBridge by roughly half while keeping auto lid, auto flush, heated seat, dryer and the foam shield.
- The built-in tank and pump. The T05 carries its own tank and assist pump, which makes flush performance less hostage to a weak household supply than tankless designs — and the published MaP figure is 1000g.
- The foam shield is genuinely useful engineering. It is the one hygiene-adjacent feature in the value class that the flagships in this file do not offer at all.
Where it loses
- The outage flush costs extra. The headline blackout-flush feature requires a battery box sold separately. Bought without it, a power cut leaves a fixture that cannot flush — the opposite of a gravity toilet.
- Warranty and documentation are the thin layer. One-year coverage, and specification detail that requires cross-checking retailer listings against the manual — the desk had to reconcile conflicting figures, which is itself a finding.
- Consumables. Foam solution and the water filter are recurring purchases the flagships do not impose in the same way; small money, but it belongs in the TCO line.
Buy it if the integrated form at a four-figure ceiling is the brief, and you will buy the battery box on day one. Skip it if you need warranty depth or a parts network with a decade behind it.

| Flush | TORNADO FLUSH dual flush 1.0 / 0.8 gpf with CEFIONTECT glaze; pressure-independent Hybrid Ecology flush system |
| Wash | Instant (tankless) warm water; rear, front, oscillating & pulsating wash |
| Hygiene system | EWATER+ on wand, bowl and under the seat; PREMIST before each use — the most complete documented hygiene set in this file |
| Automation | Auto open/close lid, auto flush with manual backup, night light, energy-saver timer |
| Comfort | Heated seat (82–97°F wash-water range documented), warm-air dryer (approx. 95–140°F), deodorizer |

| Fit | Seat height 17-11/16″; ADA compliant; Cotton finish only on RS |
| Warranty | 3 years residential limited (1 year commercial) |
Where it wins
- Hygiene, outright — again. EWATER+ treating wand, bowl and the underside of the seat, plus PREMIST, is a system no rival in this file matches end to end. The 9.4 is the highest hygiene score this desk has published in any class.
- Water discipline. 1.0 / 0.8 gpf is the lowest full-flush figure here, achieved without surrendering the flush to a pump's mercy.
- Three years of residential warranty — triple the value class, at the flagship tier where a service visit is a three-figure event.
Where it loses
- The price is the price. Street money starts where the value class ends twice over. The TCO score of 5.4 is the desk saying so arithmetically, not rhetorically.
- Installed cost compounds it. Add removal, a licensed plumber and any outlet work and the project total moves well past $5,500 in most markets — see the ledger.
- Finish discipline. Cotton only, and the block-style remote where the AS above it gets the slimmer stick remote. You are paying flagship money for the entry Neorest's trim level.
Buy it if this is a ten-to-fifteen-year fixture decision and hygiene engineering plus warranty depth are the criteria. Skip it if the same money must also remodel the room around it.

| Warranty | Kohler Intelligent Toilet 3-year limited warranty per current Kohler/retailer documentation (some older listings state 1 year — verify the term in force at purchase) |
Where it wins
- The outage answer, built in. Up to 100 emergency flushes on internal backup is the strongest power-cut provision here — the Horow charges extra for a lesser version of the same idea.
- Compactness as a feature. At just over 26 inches long it fits bathrooms the Neorest's footprint argues with, and the sculpted one-piece form is the design object of the file.
- UV plus electrolyzed wand cleaning is a documented two-mechanism hygiene system; only the Neorest's EWATER+ coverage of bowl and seat underside out-ranges it.
Where it loses
- No published MaP figure found. Pump-assisted performance is asserted; the desk could not trace a MaP score in manufacturer or retailer documentation, so the Wash score is earned on the wash system, not on an assumed flush number.
- Warranty documentation needs care. Listings disagree between one-year and three-year limited terms. The current Kohler intelligent-toilet warranty document states three years; a buyer should confirm in writing before a $5,000-plus purchase, and the ambiguity itself costs Build points.
- Flagship TCO, like the Neorest. The 1.28 gpf full flush is also the thirstiest figure in this file.
Buy it if the bathroom is compact, design-led, or outage-prone. Skip it if you want the flush's paper trail as complete as the Neorest's.
The installed-cost ledger: what a smart toilet actually costs
Every figure above is the carton. The project is larger, and in the value class the additions can reach 40% of the fixture price:
Worked totals: a Horow T05 bought at $949 and installed with a plumber and a new outlet lands at roughly $1,575–$2,450 all-in. A Neorest RS at $4,679 street lands at roughly $5,300–$6,150. The ratio between the classes survives installation — but the absolute gap narrows, which is precisely why the value class's TCO scores hold up as well as they do.
Deciding between a fixture and a seat that does most of this on your existing bowl? That is a separate file: smart toilet vs. bidet seat (Guide G-31).
Frequently asked questions
Does a smart toilet need an electrician as well as a plumber?
Usually, yes — or at least an outlet audit first. All four fixtures here need a GFCI outlet within cord reach. If one already exists beside the toilet, the plumber alone suffices. If not, the electrician's $250–$600 is part of the project, and WoodBridge's warranty language additionally requires licensed-plumber installation.
What happens in a power outage?
It divides the file. The Kohler Veil flushes up to 100 times on built-in backup. The Horow T05 flushes on backup only with its separately sold battery box. The WoodBridge EBT-class documentation explicitly notes no power-failure flush on some models — check the exact model. A gravity toilet, by contrast, does not care. If outages are routine where you live, weight this heavily.
Is 1.0 gpf enough to flush reliably?
At the top of the MaP scale, yes on paper: both value models publish 1000g MaP scores, and the Neorest achieves its 1.0/0.8 gpf with a pressure-independent flush system. MaP is a laboratory bulk-removal test, not a guarantee for every drain line — older, rough, or poorly sloped drains are the honest caveat for any low-volume fixture.
What is a foam shield, and is it worth anything?
A foam dispenser lays a foam layer on the bowl water before use. It suppresses splash-back and contains odour at the surface. It is a real, mechanical effect — not a scent gimmick — and in this file only the value class (Horow T05, WoodBridge B0930S) fits it. It costs consumables: budget the foam solution as a running cost.
Can a smart toilet be repaired, or is it disposable at this price?
Repairable in principle; the question is parts depth in year five. TOTO and Kohler maintain parts networks and published documentation. The value brands' long-term parts availability is thinner, which is why Build, warranty & support — not wash performance — is where their scores fall.
Smart toilet or electric seat — which should I buy?
If the toilet itself is due for replacement, the fixture integrates everything and removes the seat-fit problem. If the toilet is sound, an electric seat delivers most of the wash and comfort for a tenth of the project cost. The full decision is worked through in Guide G-31.
